On the periphery of the performing arts — on the fraying edge, if one will — wondrous discoveries can be made. The internationally renowned Violinist Barbara Lüneburg seeks here, together with Martin Mallaun, to fathom the acoustical possibilities inherent in the (until now practically nonexistent) combination of violin and zither.

Working together with contemporary musicians, the two artists are in the process of creating a new literature for this particular instrumental combination, making appropriate contrast between this new literature, musical improvisation and the more traditional music of the past.

  Visual and acoustic archival material of space exploration and astronomical photographs meet in the suggestive soundscapes by composer Helga Pogatschar. In Moonphases she combines electronic sound with the live instruments zither, accordion, and violin. The musicians are accompanied by the scenography of Clea T. Waite’s mesmerizing film images of the Moon. Pogatschar’s composition and the musicians’ improvisations create an irritating field of tension between the strange and the homey, the future and nostalgia. Because that one-time science-fiction of travel to the Moon is now an oldie, inevitably accompanied by Spaceship Orion and the retro-sounds of the 60’s synthesizer. ---

  Von den farbigen Schatten” nannte sich die Veranstaltung im Rahmen des Festivals “Klangraum im Herbst”, die die Besucher in das eindrucksvolle, dreistöckige Mühlengebäude lockte. Bilder und Skulpturen des Künstlers, dazu Musik von Violinistin Barbara Lüneburg und Martin Mallaun an der Konzertzither, füllten zauberhaft die Räume. Die eigens für die Matinee angefertigte farbig-transparente Gestaltung der Fenster schuf eine Atmosphäre der “farbigen Schatten”, mit der auch die Musiker spielten, die in den drei Räumen mit alter und neuer Musik eigene Stimmungen schufen. Die beiden jungen Virtuosen führten, von Farbe zu Farbe, auf eine Zeitreise von der Moderne über das Wienerlied bis zum Barock - ein Genuss für Augen und Ohren, der den ganzen folgenden Tag in ein besonderes Licht tauchte.

  “moonphases” vertrat hier in musikalischer Hinsicht den im Festival am überzeugendsten besetzen klangsinnlichen Aspekt, der hier mit Akkordeon (Harald Pröckl), Zither (Martin Mallaun) und Violine (Barbara Lüneburg) sowie aus diesen Instrumenten gewonnenem Zuspielmaterial zu lyrischen, auch sphärischen Klängen von elektrisierender Wirkung fand.
